CASTING PROCEDURES

The following photos are supplied for those clients wishing to order wet molded thigh and/or calf lacers.  Negative casts of the legs are to be supplied to me.   I fill the casts in order to have exact copies of your legs for the molding process.

Wrap the leg using plastic food wrap so that the leg is covered from the upper thigh area to below the ankle axis.

Obtain plaster casting material from a medical supply store or from one of the casting sites on the Internet.  4" wide material is best.  Soak the wrap in warm water and allow to soak through - lightly squeeze the wrap to remove excess water.  Starting at the top of the thigh area, begin to wrap the leg overlapping the material 1" to assure a solid cast.  Continue down the leg.

Continue to wrap the leg smoothing the plaster to assure the gauze material is fully impregnated with plaster.

Allow the cast to dry slightly and then using EMT scissors, begin to cut the top of the cast at the thigh area and continue working your way down the cast.

Using moderate force, remove the leg from the cast being careful not to deform the cast.

Press the two cut surfaces together and using additional plaster material, seal the cut joint with a vertical strip of material.  Allow the cast to dry thoroughly before moving or shipping.  Drying time can be up to two days.

(EMT scissors are shown in the lower left corner of this picture - note the flat cutting surface.)
